The Transom in Print, August 13, 2008: The Reinvention of Kirsten Dunst; Brice Marden's Island Paradise
Irina Aleksander goes on the trail of Kirsten Dunst, who took up residence in her $3 million Tribeca penthouse in March and has since been spotted all over (down)town--hanging out near the DJ booth at the Beatrice Inn, wandering the West Village in her trademark Ray Bans, dancing at Bowery Electric. Is New York courting her, or is she courting New York?
And Spencer Morgan finds out that New York artist Brice Marden is trying to entice his well-connected (and wealthy) friends to make Nevis their next vacation destination. But as one snobby social put it: "It's a beautiful old place, but I mean, seriously, who goes to Nevis?"
The Reinvention of Kirsten Dunst
A few weeks ago, at a party for the second Chelsea location of 303 Gallery, a crowd of downtown creative types milled around, outfitted in ’80s Ray Bans and indie rock T-shirts. Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore was the guest DJ, and the Virgins, a New York band of perfectly disheveled young men whose songs have been featured on Gossip Girl, performed onstage next to a pile of rubble. (The gallery was still under construction.) Around 7:30, 26-year-old actress Kirsten Dunst quietly arrived with her on-again, off-again boyfriend, Matt Creed. Ms. Dunst, dressed in a cream-colored, polka-dotted ’50s dress that hit just below the knee, roamed around, dodging the cameras. read more »

On a recent balmy Saturday on the Ladies Mile of lower Fifth Avenue, the windows of Intermix, Anthropologie and H&M were just beginning to transition into displaying fall collections, but many of the shoppers shlepping around in 90-degree heat were curiously dressed in what could be mistaken for winter wear: Frye boots! Ladies Retort With—Good Lord!—a $990 Cocktail Short
It used to be that if a grown woman were wearing shorts, it would be for purely utilitarian, counter-style moments: jogging, errands on a hot Saturday, a trip to the Laundromat. That is no longer the case.
There is the return of the ’60s high-waisted hot pants, sent down the runway this season by Erin Fetherston and L.A.M.B. There is the Bermuda short that reaches right above the knee, from Tory Burch ($195) and BCBG Max Azria ($138), for the BlackBerry clutching gals in midtown, and the neat little cuffed and expertly tailored Fanciful Short by Alice and Olivia ($165) and Badgley Mischka ($138), preferred by those going for a Lower East Side look, like the actress Kirsten Dunst. read more »

A 32-year-old ad copywriter, who sings in a downtown band and has a lot of tattoos, was on the phone from the East Village. His tone was confessional.

Zodiac Scribe to Write Spider-Man 4
James Vanderbilt, writer of the Zodiac and Basic screenplays, will replace the original Spider-Man scribe David Koepp in the drafting of the fourth installment of the superhero series. Producers want more character-driven stories, rather than a focus on special effects, according to Reuters/the Hollywood Reporter.
No deals have been made to bring back series director Sam Raimi or stars Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst.
Plot points are being closely guarded by the studio, though the intent is to scale back the story to include only two villains instead of repeating the "Spider-Man 3" model. The third installment, which grossed $336.5 million domestically this year, saw Spidey battle a busy triumvirate of evildoers in the forms of Venom, Sandman and Goblin. It was widely reckoned as overly cumbersome with one too many plot lines.
