David Chen Named Times City Hall Bureau Chief; Are the Regional Bureaus Dead?
David Chen, the longtime Trenton reporter for the Times, is replacing Diane Cardwell as the paper's City Hall Bureau Chief, according to an internal memo. Mr. Chen will join Michael Barbaro and Fernanda Santos in Room 9.
Mr. Chen's departure means there's a vacancy in Trenton, but at this point it's unclear whether the paper has any intention of filling it. read more »
Frey Number 9 on Times Bestseller List; First Week Sales at Around 14,000
The numbers are in: James Frey's Bright Shiny Morning, published by the flagship imprint of HarperCollins on May 13th, sold 14,343 copies in its first week, putting it at number nine on the New York Times Bestseller List. (It should be noted BookScan only tracks 70% of total sales.)
We hear HarperCollins is pleased.
Terminal 7: Taking That Bus Station Feel Out of Air Travel
The press junket to showcase British Airways’ $30 million renovation of Terminal 7 in JFK began at 10 a.m. in Bryant Park with a chartered bus.
At the terminal, reporters were greeted solicitously by British-accented airline staff, but didn’t get to skip going through security. Turnout was good: The Associated Press, the BBC, the New York Post, Agence France-Presse, CNBC, the Financial Times, and assorted others, including Golf for Women. (The English are big golfers, the executive editor explained.)
After 45 minutes of mulling about and sipping breakfast-y beverages came the press conference. The 18-month renovation would be to enhance what British Airways C.E.O. Willie Walsh referred to as the company’s “premium ground product.” The terminal will be LEED-certified. read more »
New York Times Magazine Exposes Readers to Blogger
A "Make Ready" of this week's New York Times Magazine just arrived, featuring the much buzzed about cover story by former Gawker editor Emily Gould. The story is headlined Exposed and features three photos of Ms. Gould excluding the cover. (One photo shows just her hands at a laptop, an Instant Message window and a web page on the screen.)
The article (which is not online yet, but probably will be soon) is heavily diaristic; for a magazine that exists to explain "The Way We Live Now" every week, it's light in sociology or cultural grasping, focusing instead on the writer's relationships and her job.
